Athletics: Runners made their way to Brighouse to compete in the re-arranged Pennine 10k. Andy Whitworth of Meltham was a clear winner from Ian Stainthorpe (Rochdale), who just held off Halifax's Dene Townend for second place.
Similarly in the women's race, Lower Wyke housewife Kath Drake won with two minutes to spare over Sharon Smith of Halifax. Never one to rest, Kath was racing again next day in the Mytholmroyd Fell Race.
Battling it out in a thunderstorm over a seven-mile course, she finished runner-up to Bingley international Carol Greenwood, but just managed to hold off Clayton-le-Moors' Kath Wallis in an epic encounter for second place, just one second separating them.
Gary Oldfield was third in the men's race for his new club Pudsey and Bramley behind Gary Wilkinson (Clay-ton-le-Moors) and Todmorden's Sean Willis, with former clubmate Richard Crossland (Bradford Airedale) first veteran in fourth.
The sun was out in the afternoon for the start of the Eldwick Gala Fell Race, an event first held in 1947, but rarely will conditions have been so wet or heavy. Dave Slater's course record of 16.01 set in 1981, or Greenwood's best of 17-48 from 1985 were never in danger.
Pudsey and Bramley international Paul Sheard won comprehensively in 17:59 from Bowland's Alan Griffith, with Malcolm Pickering (Ilkley) holding off fellow vets Dave Woodhead (Horwich) and Jack Verity (St Bede's) for third.
Recent Ilkley 10k winner Ruth Whitehead (Bingley) scored another success in the women's event in 22-06, Ilkley pair Tracey Ambler and Emma Hodgson making up the places.
First in the under-16 boys was Bingley's Lee Broadley, who finished a creditable seventh overall, with Chris Boardman second and Adam Walker third.
Finer weather and conditions were encountered in the Settle Hill Fell Race. The Yorkshire fell racing title went to 22-year-old Matt Whitfield of Bingley in a new course record of 47-35. The top three were inside Greg Hull's time of 49-20 set last year, with Sheard second in 48-13 and team-mate Gary Devine third in 49-01. Paul Low finished sixth to give Pudsey & Bramley the team prize with 11 points.
Clapham-based Whitfield is setting his sights on the first round of the Alpine Grand Prix in two weeks' time, when he travels to Lenzerheide, Switzerland.
The Yorkshire women's title went to Keighley & Craven's Jo Anne Prowse, who won by the tightest of margins in a sprint finish from Sally Newman (Glossopdale), both runners being credited with 60-58, with Ambler two minutes behind. In the girls' under-18s, Sarah Dugdale secured an English junior silver medal behind Kate Bailey (Staffs).
Prowse was one of the many who gave the English Senior race at fog-bound Dockray Helvellyn a miss. There were tremendous performances though from Bingley's Robb Jebb, who was fourth, and Keighley & Craven's Karen Slater, who was second woman.
