A mum-of-two has lost her fight against cancer five days after the birth of her first grandchild.

The funeral was being held today of Josie Smith, 39, of Wibsey Park Avenue, Wibsey, Bradford, who died on Sunday.

Her family have paid tribute to her fight against the cancer which enabled her to be at the birth of her first grandson Cameron who was born to her daughter Lisa last Wednesday at Bradford Royal Infirmary.

Her fiance David Armstrong said she was very ill but had been overjoyed by the birth and had been the first to hold the youngster.

She had undergone chemotherapy for lung cancer diagnosed in October and had just started radiotherapy when two weeks ago doctors discovered the disease had spread to her liver.

She was given between six months and two years to live but the cancer quickly took hold and she died ten days later.

"She was the bravest, most caring and loving person I have ever met," he said.

"She was more bothered about me and the children than herself. Even at her last breath she was reassuring me.

"She was there at the birth of her first grandson and she was very proud of him and Lisa.

"It was very important to her - she wanted to watch him being born and she was very happy, crying with joy.

"I don't think she realised then how poorly she was but she was a fighter and didn't let it get to her."

He said they had been living together for 18 months and planned to get married in the year 2000.

"It seemed like I had known her all my life even though we had been together for the last 18 months.

"She fought all the way to the end and she thought she was going to beat it - she was positive all the way through."

Mrs Smith leaves a daughter Lisa, 17, son Damien, 13, and three brothers Jamie, Johnny and Ray.
