Yorkshire, with a first innings lead of 258 runs, made Kent follow-on at Maidstone today after they had been bowled out last night for 165.

Chris Silverwood and Paul Hutchison soon put Kent under pressure with a keen opening spell and David Fulton survived a loud shout for lbw off the last ball of Silverwood's first over.

Fulton's opening partner, Robert Key, also had to fight hard in a bid to see off the new ball and with six overs gone Kent were 19 without loss.

Kent would have been in even deeper trouble yesterday if Ben Phillips and Min Patel had not put on 66 for the last wicket and if 17 overs had not been lost to bad light straight after the tea interval.

Yorkshire's fast bowlers have an indomitable spirit at the moment and so confident was skipper David Byas yesterday that they would create early havoc that he declared at 423 for seven so that they could make their presence felt before lunch.

The ploy worked for Key was soon lbw to Hutchison and Fulton would also have gone by the interval if Anthony McGrath had not put him down at first slip off Silverwood.

Those seven overs up to lunch on a grimly cold day were enough to make Kent realise they were up against two of the sharpest fast bowlers in the country and they quickly slid to 30 for five after the break as Silverwood and Hutchison maintained their relentless assault.

Soon after the start of his spell, Hutchison had received a warning from umpire John Hampshire for running on to the pitch and there was briefly the fear in the Yorkshire camp that he would be ordered out of the attack, as happened at Durham, but he experienced no further problems.

Both bowlers swung the ball and got movement off the seam and it was Silverwood who struck two vital blows in consecutive overs as Trevor Ward was lbw and West Indian Carl Hooper tried to pull a ball which was not quite short enough and spooned up a catch for Gavin Hamilton to take rushing in from mid-on.

Then Hutchison snatched back the spotlight from his partner by sending Alan Wells's off-stump flying out of the ground with his next ball being much too fast for Mark Ealham who edged it to Richard Blakey.

Matthew Fleming was next in and Yorkshire jubilantly thought Hutchison had achieved the hat-trick as Matthew Wood sprawled forward at short leg to hold up the ball, but umpire Hampshire ruled it had only come off the pad.
