THE self-help approach of bored Burley-in-Wharfedale youths is starting to pay off.

Village youngsters have long complained they have nothing to do. However, they are now working hard to try and put that right.

Between 30 and 40 youngsters are working with the Burley Youth Forum to bring about the facilities they want.

Under the national Young Enterprise scheme, six different 'companies' have been set up to try and bring about a basketball area, a place for in-line skating and a dry cafe area.

The youngsters, guided by villager and Ilkley parish councillor Bob Jones (a member of the Burley Youth Forum), have made rapid progress since the scheme was launched last month.

Mr Jones told those gathered for Burley Community Council's annual general meeting: "We believe it is very important for young people to have some physical input. Some of the schemes produced so far have been very impressive.

"Each company has to produce a portfolio outling fundraising ideas and possible locations for schemes."

He said: "One option being looked at is an open day at the village youth club.

"I believe it is only used a couple of nights a week as a youth club so the youngsters are looking at ways to maybe maximise its use."

The Young Enterprise Scheme will provide the youngsters with valuable experience, attending trade fairs for example, but ultimately could result in the facilities they want, feels Mr Jones.

He said: "There is no shortage of fundraising ideas. An open air concert is planned, a family activity day at the Nell Bank Centre, a youth five-a-side tournament, providing entertainment for children's parties and producing a calendar."

Mr Jones said the scheme would not be officially launched until September so there was still time for interested young people to take part. 'Company' meetings are held weekly at Burley Middle School.

He also revealed the Youth Forum was bidding for charity status.

If this was successful it would mean easier access to grants and sponsorship.

Dennis Warwick, chairman of Burley Community Council, said: "It is clear a very positive approach is being taken. Things are moving and I hope people won't become impatient. It will take time."
