A warrant has been issued for the arrest of a paedophile who has been living just a few yards away from a Keighley school.

John Frank Hattam, formerly of South Street, Keighley, received a nine-month prison sentence last year when he was convicted of two charges of indecent assault on girls under the age of 16. On his release from prison Hattam, 40, gave an address of 30 Drewery Road, close to the site of Highfield Middle School. But he has not been seen there for some time.

A warrant was issued at Bingley Magistrates Court because he failed to notify police of a change in his home address within 14 days of being released from prison. He was summoned to appear before Bingley magistrates on April 27 this year but failed to turn up.

New laws brought in last year mean all convicted sex offenders, especially paedophiles, must tell police where they are living - or face six months in prison. A directory lists offenders and gives details of their address, age and convictions.

Highfield Middle School head-teacher Terry Peterson says he was unaware that Hattam was believed to be living in the area. He told us: "The safety of children is a primary concern of all staff and it is a message we try to get across to all children." He added that he would be contacting Keighley Police to discuss the case.

Keighley police Inspector Mick Hopwood confirmed that police want to speak to Hattam and that inquiries are continuing. "A warrant has been issued because he failed to appear in court," he says.

Insp Hopwood asks anyone with information on Hattam's whereabouts to ring Keighley Police on 617083.
