Thoughtless motorists are putting pedestrians in danger at a junction in Idle, say worried residents.

They claim the spot has become so dangerous that no one will take up the crossing patrol job which has been vacant for more than two years.

Now members of the Idle and Thackley Community Council are hoping Bradford Council can come up with a solution to make it safer for adults and children from nearby Thorpe Middle School to cross the junction of New Street, The Green and Butt Lane.

Community Council chairman Ann Levitt said motorists were cutting down visibility of pedestrians by parking too near the junction.

"People have to walk practically into the road to see down New Street anyway," she said.

"And when there are cars there they are having to further into the road.

"We are trying to find some way of making it into a safer junction for pedestrians and drivers.

"We are hoping to get a new crossing patrol as well - it's nearly two years since we had one.

"The money is there but no one wants to do it because it's a bad junction and they are a bit worried.

"If we could get two people to job share that would be enough."

Mrs Levitt has already a site meeting with ward councillor Jeanette Sunderland and Council officers.

Councillor Sunderland said: "No one will do the crossing patrol job because it's so dangerous they would have to stand out with traffic coming past in both directions."

A Council spokesman said: "Our engineers are looking into the matter following the meeting with residents.

"The Council makes every effort to keep school crossing points fully staffed but we often find it difficult to fill vacancies.

"We rely on members of the local community to fill posts like these and we would like to ask people to come forward and offer their much-needed services."
