Yorkshire's Darren Gough was the toast of England as they completed their first major series win on home soil for 13 years by wrapping up South Africa's innings in just half an hour amid emotional scenes at Headingley today.
Resuming on 185 for eight needing a further 38 runs for victory, South Africa were dismissed for 195 to earn England a memorable 23-run victory after Angus Fraser and Gough claimed a wicket apiece inside the opening eight overs.
Fraser had Allan Donald caught behind and Gough sealed victory by trapping last man Makhaya Ntini lbw.
It completed Gough's best ever Test match figures of six for 42 and he was immediately surrounded by his jubilant team-mates before being joined by his euphoric wife and son out on the pitch.
Today's jubilation followed his delight of yesterday when he claimed both his 100th Test wicket and 500th first class victim.
The estimated 6,000 crowd, who made the trip to Headingley to take advantage of the free admission on offer, swarmed around the players to celebrate England's first five-Test series win on home soil since beating Australia 3-1 in 1985.
Gough savoured England's victory and looked ahead to the winter Ashes tour to Australia.
The Yorkshire paceman said: "Hopefully, we can keep the same side together and build on the team spirit.
"If we do and we play like we have these last few games we've got a good chance of going to Australia and coming back with the Ashes."
Mark Butcher was voted Man of the Match for his first innings century while Michael Atherton was England's Player of the Series.
Paceman Donald was South Africa's Player of the Series.
