JON Clay made it a hat-trick of wins in the Otley Town Road Race on Tuesday, the Team Brite man leading home the field of 78 riders who lapped the circuit every four minutes in a spectacular race lasting 75 minutes.
The race, organised by Otley Cycle Club and Chevin Mountain Bike Club, was started outside Chevin Cycles by the Lord Mayor of Leeds, Coun Graham Kirkland.
The race curcuit took in Bondgate, Burras Lane, West Chevin Road, Birdcage Walk, East Chevin Road and Gay Lane and speeds up to 50 mph were reached by the top class field of professional riders.
It was Clay who crossed the finishing line near Safeway supermarket first to complete a hat-trick of wins.
The Horsforth man is a big favourite with the local crowd and he was cheered to victory. He was followed over the line by Mark Walsham opf the Linda McCartney Food team with Wayne Randle of Race Scene Van Tuyl third; Chris Walker of Team Brite fourth; Dave Williams, a BCF private member, fifth; Rob Hayles of Team Brite sixth; Gary Adamason of Team Travelwise seventh; Paul West of Adidas eighth; Mark Buttrill of Northern Foils Deeside Cycles ninth and Andrew Critchlow of Team Chevin NFS tenth.
The Under-23 prize was won by Paul West of Adidas who was an entry on the line.
The prize for the most aggressive rider went to Wayne Randle while Sam Ward of Otley Cycle Club finished in the bunch and won a helmet as the best Otley rider. Another Otley Rider Richard Hedges of Team Chevin NFS also finished in the bunch.
Prime results were: 10 minutes - 1, Wayne Randle; 2, Nick Craig (Adidas); 3, Russell Downing; 4, Mike McKay (Adidas).
20 minutes - 1, Mike McKay; 2, Rob Hayles; 3, Matt Guy (Adidas); 4, Julian Ramsbottom (Team Harrods).
30 minutes - 1, Wayne Randle; 2, Mark Walsham; 3, Jon Clay; 4, Chris Walker (Brite Team).
40 minutes - 1, Mark Walsham; 2, Chris Walker; 3, Wayne Randle; 4, Jon Clay.
50 minutes - 1, Mark Walsham; 2, Wayne Randle; 3, Chris Walker; 4, Jon Clay.
60 minutes - 1, Mark Walsham; 2, Wayne Randle; 3, Chris Walker; 4, Jon Clay.
Prizes were presented by the Lord Mayor and by Rick Peacock of Chevin Cycles.
Kitchings of Otley sponsored the team prime prize and provided the official course cars.
