Paul Hutchison claimed his fifth wicket of the innings on the final morning of an absorbing Roses match at Headingley today, but Yorkshire were unable to prevent Lancashire from gradually building up a useful lead.
He removed first innings centurion John Crawley when he had added only three to his overnight score and Darren Lehmann dismissed Wasim Akram but Warren Hegg continued to frustrate the home side.
Hutchison yesterday destroyed Lancashire's early batting by taking four wickets for two runs in 25 balls as the Red Rose crumbled to 27 for four at which stage they were just 49 in front.
Crawley and Hegg then started a revival which had Lancashire resuming today on 109 for four but Hutchison was not long in improving on his best figures of the season by having Crawley caught behind by Richard Blakey for 56 off 107 balls with eight firmly struck boundaries.
Crawley had put on 95 in 28 overs with Hegg and at 117 for five, Lancashire were 144 ahead with the game nicely balanced.
Lancashire skipper Wasim, who has hardly been on the field in this game because of a combination of a foot injury and illness, joined Hegg who sliced a boundary off Hutchison to go to his 50 off 89 balls with seven fours.
Yorkshire were in need of a wicket and it came when Wasim attempted to pull a long hop from Lehmann but it kept low and bowled the Pakistani for 21, making Lancashire 159 for six.
