It's official - Agadoo is NOT the most irritating record of all time.
But cheesy pop stars Black Lace, who are the perpetrators of the infamous song, say they have been cheated of that dubious honour.
In a new survey carried out by HMV, Barbie Girl by Aqua, which topped the UK charts last year, was voted the worst, with Agadoo coming in at number two.
But John Wagstaff, of Black Lace's management company NOW Music, based in Scholes, Cleckheaton, said today: "It's very disappointing not to be number one. Can we have a recount?"
And Colin Gibb, who is a member of the band with Rob Hopcraft, added: "I don't think it should be number two. Agadoo is far more irritating than anyone else.
"But it keeps selling mainly because it's good fun."
Agadoo, which features nonsensical lyrics such as "Push pineapple, shake a tree" was first a hit in 1984 when it stayed in the charts for an amazing 30 weeks.
The song is now enjoying a revival after being featured on a television advert recently. The commercial for Peugeot 106 cars depicted cannibals running screaming from their victims when Agadoo comes on their car radio.
Colin said: "I would never have thought 14 years ago that Agadoo would still be going now. I expected it to be dead in six months but it's now such a permanent fixture in so many places that it's become a kind of classic, even though I hate to use the word."
NOW Music has just released a new version of the song, accompanied by a video filmed at Club Barcelona in Birstall, and it has already gone into the singles charts at number 64.
The Top Ten most irritating songs of all time was compiled by HMV staff interviewing customers at its flagship store in London.
HMV spokesman Rob Partridge said: "It seems that some people really do keep grudges. Benny Hill's Ernie (The Fastest Milkman in the West) - originally a hit as far back as 1971 - was mentioned by two customers."
Other songs which received honourable - or dishonourable - mentions include Star Trekkin' by The Firm, The Chicken Song by Spitting Image, O Superman by Laurie Anderson, I Will Always Love You by Whitney Houston, Grandad We Love You by Clive Dunn, I Would Do Anything For You (But I Won't Do That) by Meat Loaf, Every Loser Wins by Nick Berry, Eye of the Tiger by Survivor, Too Shy by Kajagoogoo, Two Little Boys by Rolf Harris, Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep by Middle of the Road, Making Your Mind Up by Bucks Fizz- and anything by Jive Bunny.
