After opening the season on Thursday, the Bradford Sunday Alliance League starts its Sunday fixtures tomorrow with a programme of Premier Division matches.

Oakenshaw, after a record-breaking 1997-98 season in which they only dropped five points in retaining the championship, are strong favourites to complete a hat-trick of titles - a feat only achieved before by East Bowling Unity, who won five titles from 1989.

Oakies rely on the same side, plus Fairweather Green's domineering centre half Martin Carnall, who should be a useful acquisition.

Acclimatising in the top league after promotion from the First Division has proved difficult over the years.

Some sides have successfully made the transition like Fairweather Green, whose 1997-98 promised so much early on then dipped badly when the heavy grounds came, and Sandy Lane.

Brown Cow Wyke surprised a few sides last season with a sturdy rearguard, while Bradford Moor, promoted in 1995-96 can give any team a game.

Goals from Garry Shaw, who joined the club mid-season, were a big factor in Queensbury's promotion, but he has now moved to Stanley Road.

Queensbury might find it a bit hot in the Premier while their fellow promoted team Victoria Rangers have earned a reputation as a yo-yo side. No Alliance side has gone up so many times, but the signs are that Mel Williams' outfit will surprise a few with their all-round quality, and won't necessarily be the relegation candidates many expect.

The nearest challenge to Oakenshaw should come from perennial challengers East Bowling Unity, Albion Sports, Bolton Woods and last season's runners-up Hudsons.

After several seasons without a trophy, East Bowling Unity won the League Cup last season and unearthed two exciting youngsters in Chris Jeng and Scott Stirk, while Albion Sports will also be looking to youth.
