A Bingley man who is heading a fund-raising campaign in memory of the surgeon who successfully treated him for lung cancer is today mourning the death of his brother from the disease.

John Nevison, 50, set up a campaign last month to raise more than £10,000 to buy vital equipment for cancer units at three hospitals in the district.

But fundraisers have received a blow after news that Mr Nevison's brother has lost his battle against the illness. Donald Nevison, who was 60, died at his sister's Bingley home last Wednesday. His ashes were scattered by his family at Bingley Cemetery.

Mr Nevison has paid tribute to his brother and says his death has made him even more determined than ever to carry on the appeal in his memory.

Called The Triangular Appeal, the three-month fund-raising event aims to raise money for Bradford Royal Infirmary, where four years ago lung cancer specialist Professor Sabanathan saved Mr Nevison's life.

The rest of the money is to go to St James's Hospital in Leeds, as well as to the chemotherapy unit at Airedale Hospital.

The culmination of the campaign will be a charity concert featuring Bradford band Smoky, which will take place on Saturday, November 28, at Keighley's Victoria Hall.

For tickets contact Mr Nevison on Bradford 770966, or write to him at 37, Ashley Road, Bingley, BD16 1DZ.
