Road safety plans which it is hoped will save the lives of Denholme people have been lodged with Bradford council.
The proposals are for new safety markings on the busy A629 Halifax Road, just outside the centre of Denholme. The road markings would be dotted along the A629 on a stretch between the Five Flags Hotel and the Whalley Lane junction.
To increase driver awareness and reduce vehicle speeds as drivers approach the town centre, a combination of signs and markings have been proposed. These include using areas of red surfacing on a new gateway near the junction of Whalley Lane, and at a point halfway between Trough Lane and Beech Drive. There would be additional red bar markings outside the Five Flags and red surfacing on a stretch next to Lower White Shaw Farm.
New signs would also be erected outside the Five Flags Hotel, and near the junctions of Beech Drive and Whalley Lane.
The scheme would also introduce guardrailing at the existing zebra crossing and provide a short length of new footway between Well Street and Tunnel Street.
During the last five years, 107 people have been injured on the stretch of road, with eight of those casualties receiving serious injuries.
An equally worrying statistic is the 17 child casualties which have been recorded, with four of those children sustaining serious injuries.
Denholme town council has campaigned for greater traffic calming measures and a reduction in the current speed limit to 30mph.
Estimated cost of the safety scheme is $28,000, which will be financed with a $10,000 handout form Shipley Constituency Area Panel and money from the minor works capital budget.
The plans will be discussed at a Highways Sub Committee meeting this Wednesday.
