A crowd of over 200 watched the inaugural Airedale and Wharfedale League Third Teams' Cup Final for the Ian Chappell Cup at Burley's Hodson Park ground on Bank Holiday Monday.

Fittingly the trophy was won by Mr Chappell's own club North Leeds who triumphed over host club Burley by 23 runs.

Batting first North Leeds posted a score of 183-5 in their 40 overs with a good start being given by openers Andy Ward (38) and John Roberts (47).

They put on 77 for the first wicket and despite a stutter when the veteran Tony Brook grabbned three wickets further contributions from Steve Belverstone (36 no) and Peter Grady (40 no) saw them to a good score.

Burley's reply was made difficult when skipper Simon Richmond, who had promoted himself to open the innings, was dismissed for six. His opening partner Jeff Colclough steadied the innings with a knock of 33 and Peter Sumner gave the innings impetus with a good knock of 62.

Their third wicket stand of 73 put Burley back in the game but Sumner lost his wicket going for another big hit.

Runs from Robert Wheeler (17) and Chris Peel (15) maintained the momentum but North Leeds has scored just too many for this Burley side who fell for 166 as Belverstone took 4-62 and Grady 3-44.

The game was an excellent advertisement for third team crick\et which h\as been enjoyed in the Airedale and Wharfedale League for the first time this season.
