A BID to buy back a community hall for the people of Newall and Clifton is looking like a winner.
Members of a committee set up to repair and re-open the
currently defunct building have been busy raising cash through car boot sales, raffles and line dancing.
And their aims have been boosted by a grant of £2,500 from Harrogate Borough Council's rural community fund.
The hall, which is next to the Spite Inn, has been closed since the lease ran out in 1997.
A poll of villagers carried out in May showed that more than 50 per cent wanted it available once more.
They have rallied round fundraising events with the
latest barbecue and line dance collecting £392.
Now the committee has even more plans in the pipeline to keep up the momentum.
Tony Field, secretary, said: "We are arranging a sponsored walk on September 13 and a bonfire on November 6.
"The walk will start and
finish with drinks and snacks in the hall and has already been well supported by local companies. It is intended to be a social and relatively leisurely day exploring the parish."
The total distance of the walk will be ten miles but less energetic souls can opt for a six-mile route in the morning or a four-mile alternative in the afternoon. Anyone wishing to take part should contact Mr Field on (01943) 461687.
