PLANS to return to winter rugby for First and Second Division Clubs have been put on ice -- for at least a year.
Surveys of both Cougar fans and sponsors had given their overwhelming backing for a return to playing the game over the winter period, but clubs have accepted that it is now too late to change for next year.
A meeting of all clubs on Wednesday voted to bring in consultants to draw up a report on the future of the winter/summer debate.
"It now looks as if we will be starting in January with the Challenge Cup and going on through to the end of summer," said director Allan Clarkson.
He added: "It was one of the most constructive meetings I have ever attended. At last there seemed to be a determination to work together for the benefit of the game without all the in-fighting between FASDA, Super League and the Rugby League officials."
The first and second division clubs are to work to get the winner of the 'Grand Final' promoted into Super League and want to establish regular promotion and relegation.
Clubs were also told that the Rugby League Cup final had become a 'listed' sporting event, protecting it from being swallowed up by satellite broadcasting. FASDA has also called for the reinstatement of the the Plate competition in addition to the Challenge Cup to give smaller clubs the chance of a big Wembley final.
Rugby League is also having to look at where the prestige finals should be played when Wembley Stadium is being redeveloped.
"The Challenge Cup Final could be played at Twikenham, Old Trafford, or taken to Wales or Scotland," Allan Clarkson said.
Nathan Antonik was named FASDA player of the week after Keighley's surprise victory over Hull KR.
The Win made Cougars only the second team to win on Humberside, after Dewsbury, this season.
Antonik was the key man of the match, putting in a masterful display in the No7 shirt. He scored two tries and kicked two goals in the 17-6 victory.
David Larder was named Supporters' Club Player of the Season during a special ceremony last night.
"There have been a lot of very impressive performances over the season, but Dave Larder has given everything in every match he has played. He has been the most consistent player without any doubt," said supporters club chairman Jack Templeton.
