A family fun day aimed at building a friendlier community succeeded beyond the organisers' wildest dreams.

Between 3,000 and 4,000 people, young and old, men and women, black and white, flocked to Keighley's Devonshire Park on Sunday to the event organised by the new Highfield People's Action Group.

The group's aim to foster community spirit succeeded beyond its wildest dreams as children organised their own five-a-side football tournament and leapt on to the stage to perform songs and recitations.

People of all ages and backgrounds shared in a host of sporting and other activities and enjoyed food and various displays.

The event was the first of its kind to be held in Devonshire Park, which had largely become a no-go area because of crime and drug use.

Abid Hussain, chairman, said at the event: "For a long time now the people of Highfield area have needed their own action group to put forward their problems and address their needs. Now they have one - The Highfield People's Action Group. This event is designed to bring friends and families in Highfield closer together.

"We hope the community will point the way forwards to a friendlier and more caring, cohesive community."

The event was officially opened by Keighley MP Ann Cryer.
