A terrified pensioner had a knife held to her throat by a robber who burst into her bedroom early today.
The 76-year-old, who lives alone in a terraced cottage near Wibsey High Street, was forced to hand over cash to the intruder
She was woken at around 4.30am when the robber burst into her bedroom wearing a makeshift mask fashioned out of her crocheted peg bag.
He was wielding a knife with a ten-inch blade.
The woman was later said to be "very shocked" but has been able to help police investigating what one detective described as "an absolutely appalling crime".
Police today promised to step up patrols in the Wibsey area to try to prevent the robber striking again.
The man was described as 5ft to 5ft 6in tall and of medium build.
He had a local accent and spoke with a deep voice. He was wearing a light-coloured top and dark trousers.
The intruder took away the peg bag which was of navy blue crocheted silk, with two crocheted handles. It is decrorated with small red and green flowers.
Detective Inspector Chris Thompson, who is leading the hunt, praised the woman's courage.
"Obviously the lady is very shaken by the incident in view of her age and vulnerability.
"She is helping us with the investigation. We think it is an absolutely appalling crime committed against one of the most vulnerable in our society.
Mr Thompson said that most people would feel revulsion at this crime and appealed for anyone with any information to contact the police.
"People should be aware of this and take precautions," he said.
Meanwhile the police were putting on extra patrols in the Wibsey area, the officer added.
