FORMER county court offices could become a town centre venue for adult education in Otley.
A bid by Park Lane College - which took control of Airedale and Wharfedale College in August - to convert the Bondgate offices to two classrooms was this week given a vote of approval by Otley Town Council's plans sub-committee.
Members admitted they were disappointed that college chiefs were not considering reopening their existing building at Wharfe Street School.
But committee chairman Phil Coyne said the application had to be considered on its own merits. "We recognise that issue but it is not a planning matter.
"Separating it from the Wharfe Street issue, it is valuable to have the college in the centre of town, encouraging extra shoppers and it is in a good location near the bus station and car parks," he said.
Concerns were raised over provision for parking at the new site, although members pointed out it was near public car parks which would be largely free for evening classes.
Council leader Sue Egan said the council had urged Park Lane to consider the Wharfe Street building.
"But if they're not wanting to do that, the college obviously still has a tremendous amount to offer the town and I think we can support it.
"However I do regret that they have opted not to maximise the facility they already have," she said.
"And if we have to lose our courts, then using them for further education is good."
