A Bradford holidaymaker has died after a daredevil holiday stunt went tragically wrong.
Andrew Race, 33, from Baildon, died in the early hours of yesterday in Leeds General Infirmary, where he was transferred from Marmaris State Hospital in Turkey.
He suffered spinal injuries after diving into the Selale waterfall near the village of Turgut during a safari-style day trip with his girlfriend Dionne Chappell.
Dionne, who witnessed the accident, says several other tourists leapt off the cliffs into the water without incident. Mr Race was taken to Marmaris State Hospital following the accident on August 21 and doctors carried out a six hour operation.
He was flown home the following week and cared for in Leeds Infirmary, where his condition remained critical - but his fight for life ended yesterday. His flight home by air ambulance was arranged by Thomson Holidays, the company the couple had been travelling with.
Today, company spokesman Rachel Wearmouth said: "We are very, very sorry to hear the news and our hearts go out to Miss Chappell and the family. It's an absolute tragedy.
"The doctor at Marmaris hospital said a similar accident had happened before at this particular waterfall, although this is the first time it has happened to one of our clients.
Mr Race, a building site worker, led an active, sporty life and enjoyed working out in the gym. His younger brother Wayne - a former Bradford Northern and Keighley Cougars player - was flown out to the resort by Thomson Holidays.
An inquest is expected to open later this week.
