Rawdon Rangers 7 Burley Juniors 1
THE game was a pre-season friendly and although the score suggests Rangers domination the actual football played was far from it.
With Burley's commitment and determination never once letting their heads drop. Rangers were 3-0 up at half-time with goals from Westcot (2) and Vardy.
Burley came back to make it 3-1 from Elliot shortly after the restart and should have got more if it hadn't been for brilliant goal-keeping from M Ahmed (Man-of-the-Match), who in his first game for the club was absolutely brilliant.
Rangers kept battling away at the Burley goal for D Vannyswyk to score with a flying header, followed by another from Westcott and two from Woody.
Pool U-16S 1 BURLEY U-16S 3
Burley Juniors Under-16's have started the season with two friendly fixtures, away to Pool and home to Ilkley.
In the away match at Pool, Burley played the brighter, more flowing football, and ran out worthy winners 1-3 with goals from Mike Carroll, a well taken goal from Guy Layfield, and a stunning volley from Simon Powell which deserved to be on Match Of The Day. It was a shame that Man-of-the-Match Sam King's brilliantly headed goal from a pin point cross from Chris Wheeler, had to be disallowed by the referee for not putting a name on the cross.
Burley's second friendly fixture against Ilkley was a keenly contested match which neither side deserved to lose. Burley started the livelier of the two teams, however fell behind after 10 minutes following some slack defending. Last season's leading goal scorer Gareth Goodison opened Burley's scoring following a corner from Carroll. Goodison scored a well taken second followin a good long ball down the line from Jonathan Griffiths. Ilkley equalised early into the second-half, before Goodison completed his hat-trick to seal a Burley victory.
Burley Juniors U-9s 4 Idle U-9s 1
Hoping to add to last week's winning start Burley UYnder-9s did not disappoint. In a one sided first half Burley had fine shots by Thwaites and Gadsby well saved by the Idle 'keeper whilst Davy in the Burley net was rarely troubled. Burley eventually broke through when Tom Heathcote beat three Idle players and crossed to Thwaites who beat the Idle 'keeper with a well placed shot. It appeared that Burley would end the first -half with a 1-0 lead but on one of Idle's rare attacks a firmly struck shot was deflected by Gadsby into his own net.
The second half continued with more intense Burley pressure which saw Thwaites score his second goal after a well worked corner by Skelton and Heathcote. Gadsby scored a third and Heathcote ended the game with an eight-yard shot which beat the Idle 'keeper with ease. McKee,Darwin and goalkeeper Davy dealt very well with the occasional Idle attacks, but all in all the result was a fine reward for a team that played collectively very well. Man of the Match was Scott Thwaites .
