OLICANIAN CC past and present players met on Sunday to contest the Dick Smith Memorial Trophy. Chairman Mick Christopher led a minute's silence before the match as all present paid their respects to Dick Smith and former chairman, Phil Gillson, a stalwart of the club who worked tirelessly and selflessly behind the scenes for over 20 years.
The game began with Keith Wilkinson and Martin Ashworth opening the batting for the Past XI.
Their progress was stifled by outstanding spells of tight bowling from Rod Dewhurst and John Hardisty.
Josh Simcox, Rupert Jones (2- 11) and Robert Brear (3-13) continued to apply the pressure as the Present XI made their opponent work hard for their runs. Ashworth (31) and Wilkinson (17) were eventually dismissed and the former players finished on 124- 7.
In reply Peter Blackwell and Brent Armitage took the field for the Present XI. They had to contend with the pace of Richard Cooper and the ingenuity of spinner John Coates.
Peter Blackwell made 76 not out and Brear 44 not out as the Present XI won by nine wickets.
