Amateur RL: West Bowling player coach Glenn Barraclough led his side to an impressive 42-9 victory against West Hull Lions in the first round of the Yorkshire Electricity County Cup at Bankfoot.

Hooker Barraclough set the tone when after four minutes he combined with newcomer Richard Annetts in a clever run-a-round, which enabled wingman Shah Basha to score in the corner.

Less than five minutes later he spotted a gap in the visitors defence to plunge over near to the posts to leave Jason Woolham the easiest of conversions and open a 10-0 lead.

The Lions fought their way back into contention with a converted try and a penalty before Woolham increased the home tally with a further successful kick at goal.

On the half-hour substitute forward Lee Hunter's 30 metre break - his first touch - sent supporting centre Andy Leek over near the flag. Woolham was bang on target with the conversion.

The Hull side scraped a drop goal before Barraclough brought the half to a close by storming up the middle, drawing the full-back and putting Hunter through to the posts, Woolham again obliged with the extras, to make the score 24-9.

Bowling continued the second half where they had left off when wingman Steve Gregory powered in from 20 metre's to the corner.

Prop forward Lee Hutchinson then swotted off three defenders to plant the ball under the uprights and teenage debutante full-back Matthew Whitaker crowned an impressive afternoon's work with the last try on the whistle.

Woolham rounded off a superb goal kicking display by converting all three to give Bowling a home tie against Hunslet Warriors in the next round.

In the Pennine Premier Clayton suffered a shock home defeat at the hands of Park Amateurs 41-8 while Undercliffe gained their first success 58-24 against Worth Village.

In Division One Birkenshaw were unlucky not to pull the match out of the fire just losing 22-18 at Park Amateurs A.

Birky had only a Jason Brooksbank try to show for their efforts when they trailed 16-4 at the break. They fell further behind 22-4 early in the second period and a hefty reverse looked possible. Andy Redmond two and Brandon Robinson led the fight back with tries but even counting a Brooksbank goal it was to late to effect a win.

Dudley Hill Eagles are on the way following a 30-18 success at St Joseph's in Division Two.

The Eagles were always in charge and with a half time advantage of 18-6 never looked in any danger. Their scorers were Danny Murgatroyd (2), Gareth Shepherd and Mark Fieldhouse tries with Stuart Craig kicking five goals to add to his touchdown.

In Division Three West Bowling A let an 18-0 lead slip away and cannot complain about the 28-24 home defeat at the hands of Boothtown Terriers.

Loose-forward Matthew Haddock was in fine form for Bowling.

Shipley posted a 40-6 home win against Littleborough A in the Division Five match of the day. Tries to Gerard Whitehead three, Adam Sheridon No2, Carl Sheridon and Martin McNicholas plus six goals from Steve Ellison did the trick for Shipley.

West Bowling B went down heavily 68-12 at Sowerby Bridge Robins A Mick Gorman No2 and Chris Makowski scored the points.
