Athletics: The Yorkshire veterans championships are incorporated within Sunday's Horsforth 10km from the High School with an 11am start.

This popular event has attracted a field of over 600 entries, with a further 200 expected on the day. Reigning Yorkshire five mile veteran champion John Cordingley has entered, but will be under pressure in the Over 40 category from Bingley team mate Eddie Irvine.

Similarly in the Over 60 section Bingley pair John Smithhurst and Gerry Spink are clear medal prospects. Sue Carriss should be the one to beat in the Ladies Over 45 category.

The Bingley veteran was in winning form a fortnight ago over the same distance at Kirkstall and also was in the top three at last week's Selby half marathon. Sue Garrad of Goole Vikings, who won the Selby event, has also entered in the Over 40 section. The open race has attracted a class field with former Leeds runner Julian Moorhouse, now of Birchfield, being the one to watch.

Morley roofer John Convery was last year's winner and is in good shape, having won the Kirkstall 10km recently and should be to the fore as will Longwood's 21-year-old Ian Mitchell, a winner in 1996 on his 10km debut.

Namesake Scott Mitchell is a three times winner of the event and should feature along with last week's Morley '7' winner Darren Ward of Rotherham. Darlington's Alison Raw, winner of this year's Bingley half marathon, looks the one to beat in the ladies race.

Two young athletes from Bingley made names for themselves at the English Schools combined events championships at Hull. In the 3km race walk, Victoria Stainburn was narrowly beaten into second place in a time of 15 min 39 sec. Victoria, representing West Yorkshire, broke the stranglehold on the event where the West Midlands had five in the top six.

Oliver Brewer, representing North Yorkshire, finished fourth in the pentathlon. He ran 11.94 sec in the 80m hurdles, threw 10.83m in the shot, leaped 5.18m in the long jump before creating a personal best of 1.74m in the high jump and could still muster the strength to run the 800m in 2 min 9 sec to give him 2,854 points.
