Guiseley Academy 3 Selby Town 1

GUISELEY AFC's Academy team proved the stronger against visitors Selby Town when they played this Northern Youth Academy League fixture at St Mary's School, Menston, on Sunday.

Guiseley took a point from their opening league game at Harrogate Town but then saw Pickering Town withdraw from the second game.

Guiseley made the early running against Selby and Matt Ames' eighth minute corner was headed out from under the bar. Selby replied with a shot over the bar but then Brian Carr broke through to rifle in the opening goal in the 16th minute to maintain his goal a game status.

Carr got away again showing good pace but pulled his shot just wide. Jon Dennis was deprived by a good save from the 'keeper after he had been set up by a good crossfield ball from Phil Atkinson, fresh from his exploits with Green Lane Cricket Club.

Atkinson played well in the first-half in midfield but faded a little in the second-half as the big Selby side came more into the ascendency.

Guiseley had a let off when the Selby striker blasted wide with the goal.at his mercy but they did level when Christian levelled in the 35th minute after some poor Guiseley defending.

Selby had a period in the ascendency just before the break but Guiseley were relieved to hold out. Guiseley opened the second-half well forcing a couple of corners. Substitute Greg Jowett came on to replace Jon Dennis.

Shaun Walsh went alone when he could have squared the ball to a better placed colleague and the chance was lost.

Guiseley were then awarded a free-kick for a foul on Walsh who was starting to make his mark but it came to nought,.

Ed Neale, the young goalkeeper from Pool, had a save to make as Guiseley slackened off in midfield.

Jowett pulled the ball back well for Walsh but he shot straight at the 'keeper and another chance was lost.

Walsh however made ammends when he rose to head in Guiseley's second goal in the 76th minute.

Just two minutes later the troublesome Carr was there again to rifle in his second goal of the game and give Guiseley a 3-1 lead in the 78th minute. The nippy little striker had been picked out well by Walsh who then forced a save from the 'keeper as he started to show the form which earned him county honours last season.
