Another family pet has been killed after being attacked by two dogs.
Karen Parker and her husband Gary were disturbed around 3.45am last Friday by, what they thought was a prowler.
When they looked out of the bedroom window of their home in Westburn Avenue, Keighley, they saw two terrier-type dogs savaging their pet rabbit called Bugsy. The family got the rabbit around six years ago and it belonged to their ten-year-old daughter Danielle.
The attack comes just a couple of weeks after a pet rabbit and guinea pig were mauled to death in nearby Mannville Road, Keighley.
"The dogs had somehow managed to tip up the cage where it was kept," says Karen. "They managed to get into the meshing at the front of the cage and pull the rabbit out. By the time we had got downstairs, the dogs had run off with it."
Gary chased the dogs along Westburn Avenue but they got away, leaving the dead rabbit at the roadside.
"We had to get Danielle out of bed early to tell her what had happened," says Karen. "She was very upset."
Karen says the two dogs were white in colour. "I thought they looked like Jack Russell dogs at first but when we got closer they looked more like Staffordshire-type dogs," she adds.
Keighley police sergeant Allan Gee says: "It is up to dog owners to ensure their animals are kept under control. If they fail to do so the owner could be committing a criminal offence."
which is punishable by the courts. They could be fined and an order made to have the dogs destroyed. We would encourage dog owners to act responsibly."
