Guiseley RES 11
BARROW RES 0
STRIKERS Craig Bowers and Michael Jordan each grabbed four goals as Guiseley Reserves showed all the form that won them the Bolton Alliance title last season.
In only their second league game of the season Guiseley overran their opponents in the second-half.
Guiseley led 2-0 at the break but at the break manager Brett Ferriday instilled some urgency into their play and they responded with a nine goal blast.
It was pleasing for Craig Bowers to get back into the swing after breaking an ankle last season.
Other scorers were Julian Wilkes, Richard Dyson and substitute Andy Myhill.
The first-half was scrappy at times and Barrow had a 15 minute spell when they looked to be coming into the game and holding Guiseley.
Guiseley's team was - Nigel Muttick; Andy Bendig, Matt Daley, Simon Gough, Neil Mumby; Julian Wilkes, Richard Machell, Chris Jeng; Craig Bowers, Richard Dyson, Michael Jordan. Subs. Tama Fasavalu, Andy Myhill, Mark Flanagan, Richard Clayton, Richard Beckram.
On Saturday Guiseley make the long trek for the return game with Barrow and then on Wednesday they visit Altrincham.
The Wharfedale FA Cup tie with Bramhope is to be played at Guiseley under floodlights on Thursday, October 15, kicking-off at 7.30 pm.
FIELDS 2
GUISELEY ACADEMY 1
GUISELEY AFC's Academy youth side is getting into shape and they bagged their second win in three games in the Northern Academy Youth League when they visited Bradford side Fields on Sunday. The side was resplendent in their new strip sponsored by First Bus.
The game itself was fairly scrappy in parts but Guiseley battled well against an experienced Fields side.
Guiseley took the lead in the 25th minute when striker Shaun Walsh got a boot in before the 'keeper did to lob the ball into the net from the edge of the area.
Fields levelled in the 35th minute as Guiseley looked ragged at times but they did enough to maintain the edge and hit the winner in the second-half.
They produced a good spell in this half and substitute Alex Familio, another of manager Rob Ames ex-Harrogate Town boys, produced what was for him a rare header to net the winner.
Familio is just making his way back after a long injury absence and he went close with a similar effort in the first-half.
Greg Jowett had a tremendous game in midfield for Guiseley. The defence was reasonably tight but manager Ames feels that the side still lacks someone to control the game in midfield.
Ames said: 'I am quite pleased with the start we have made - two wins and a draw in three games - but we are not yet playing the good football I feel we are capable of. We are lucky that we have played some of the weaker teams at the start so it has given us time to sort ourselves out for the real test ahead when we meet teams such as Emley, Farsley Celtic and Ossett.'
The Guiseley side was - Ed Neale; Mike Clough (Chris Tweedie), John Galifant, Richard Beckram, James Elliott; Jon Dennis (Joe Howard), Simon Machunka (Alex Familio), Phil Atkinson, Greg Jowett; Shaun Walsh, Brian Carr.
The Academy are without a game this weekend but the following Sunday, October 11, they visit New Earswick near York.
