IT was another busy weekend for Ilkley Harriers as club members enjoyed various events.

Six Harriers competed in the Lyon Equipment Whernside Fell Race on Sunday, a tough fell race over a distance of 11.5 miles with 3,000 feet of ascent.

Low cloud and mist meant that visibility was down to a few yards for much of the race, putting navigational skills at a premium.

Race winner was Pudsey and Bramley's Paul Sheard (1 hour 33 minutes). Ilkley's Jason Helmsley had a good race to finish 8th in 1.36. Also running strongly were Helen Johnson, second lady and 60th overall in 1.55 and Geof Howard (first in the over 50 category and 30th overall in 1.46).

Good runs too by Eddie Winslow (46th in 1.52) and Pete Shields (59th in 1.55), with Neil Taylor going the long way round and enjoying hitherto unexplored areas of the Whernside fell.

The weather was rather better in the Lake District where Alison Hood was first lady in a multi sport challenge.

Run over two days, this event included a two hour canoe race, a run up the Old Man of Coniston, a night navigation event and a four hour mountain bike race. This was a major test of endurance and ability - a test which Alison rose to superbly.

Also in the Lakes, Nick Pearce raced up the highest mountain in England. He was competing in the Scafell Pike Fell Race (3,000 feet of ascent). Nick was pleased to finish 11th (first in the over 45 category) in 64 minutes.

On the roads, a number of Harriers raced in the Horsforth 10K. This was a Yorkshire Veterans Championship event. Billy Kerr finished 9th vet in 34.50. The Souyave family took part. Veteran Ken finished in 38.30, youngster Andrew in a useful 45 minutes and Janet 51 minutes.

Also competing were Malcolm Pickering, Steve Fletcher, Julie Harvey, Margot Dale and Brian Sweet.

The curry run tomorrow (Friday October 2) is in Ilkley. Harriers should meet in The Taps from 8pm.
