Bradford Grammar School suffered the frustration of a one point defeat at home to Hymers College.despite fighting back well from 30-10 down.
Hymers took an early lead through a converted try but Bradford responded with a penalty from Charles Hodgson before Hymers extended their lead with two more penalties.
Bradford then scored a converted try shortly before half-time to turn round 13-10 down.
Two unforced errors in the first four minutes of the second half, a fumble from the kick off and a sliced kick gave Hymers two more tries.
That spurred Bradford into action and, other than a long range penalty, they had most of the possession and pressure which led to three excellent tries. Had Hodgson been able to convert the last of these tries from the touchline Bradford would have snatched victory.
Bradford, who have endured some nail biting action in the opening two games of the season, look set for another tense test in the third round of the Daily Mail Schools under-18s cup .
They were seeded into the second round and have now gone forward to a third round tie at Kirkham following the withdrawl of their opponents, Northallerton College.
Last season Northallerton went down 53-0 at home to Bradford and probably found a trip there too daunting prospect although they qualified for the second round thanks to a 27-17 win over Whitby Community College.
Bingley Grammar School opened their Daily Mail challenge with a 51-0 win over St Mary's, Menston in a match which saw brothers Martyn and Tim Green as opposing coaches.
"Bingley were too strong for us although we never let up," said Martyn. "We have a new group of lads and we didn't have the experience to cope even though we worked hard."
