CROWN Addingham 3

Bingley ARMS 2

(After extra-time)

FOR the first time in years Addingham fielded a Sunday side in the prestigious Carling Challenge Trophy.

With a combination of Addingham AFC's first and second team players playing under the banner of The Crown alongside such past greats as Damion Smithson and Nick Beanland they entertained this Wakefield side in a first round game and triumphed in extra-time.

Addingham took the field with the prize carrot of a semi-final at Liverpool's Anfield and a final at Wembley dangling in front of them.

Addingham got off to a slow start and were soon a goal down as a free header was put past Dobson.

Bingley Arms had a coach full of supporters who added to the atmosphere.

Crown began to come to terms with the rough house tactics of the opposition and once they started to mix it fortunes changed.

Smithson caused all kinds of trouble up front and only some good goalkeeping kept him out.

Jamie Barrow went close and then finally equalised with a fortunate free-kick. His powerful shot was straight at the 'keeper who failed to hold it and let it squirm from his grasp into the net.

After the break Walker replaced Mills and Beanland replaced Fosdyke but the stalemate continued and the game headed for extra-time.

On a number of occasions the referee stopped the game to discipline the unruly Wakefield bench. Feelings began to run high on the pitch and some x- rated tackles flew in.

For the majority of the Addingham side this was their second major cup tie of the weekend and extra-time was certainly not welcome.

Jamie Barrow showed the full-back a clean pair of heels and fired a cracking shot into the bottom corner to renew Addingham spirits

'This though was shortlived as a Wakefield striker tricked Andy Collins and drilled in an unstoppable shot.

In the second period of extra-time tiredness was a factor and the pace of the game dropped.

Penalties looked inevitable until Barrow again used his pace down the line before drilling a ball to Smithson who was unmarked and he tapped in from two yards to send Addingham through.

A challenge on Smithson brought a penalty which should really have sealed things for Crown but Simon Collins shot weakly and the effort was saved.

Wakefield roared forward and fired in a succession of long balls but the Addingham side defended well.

A long ball bounced awkwardly and hit Beanland on the arm and he cleared upfield but the referee adjudged the handball deliberate and a penalty was awarded.

A hush fell around the pitch and the Wakefield captain stepped up to take the penalty he struck it low to his left but Andy Dobson guessed correctly and clawed the ball away and just when the kicker looked to have a free shot from the rebound Andy Collins produced a superb challenge to deny him.

The Addingham support was ecstatic when the whistle blew to end this blockbuster.
