PLANS to turn part of an historic bridleway into a safe route for cyclists has angered horse riders.
Bradford Council wants to create a safer cycling route as part of the Aire Valley Cycle Network.
It proposes to introduce measures to minimise potential dangers from other traffic whilst providing a way for cyclists to get access to public transport, such as Steeton and Silsden railway station.
However, part of the cycleway route will run along an existing bridleway close to green fields which have been earmarked for new homes.
Lisa Norris, from the Silsden-Draughton-Addingham Bridleways Group, says horse riders are unhappy with the situation.
"I don't think the council has the powers to convert bridleways into cycle tracks," she said.
"We don't mind cyclists being on them, but the council also wants to put down a stone base, which is totally unsuitable for horses."
A spokesman for Bradford Council's highways department said the council was looking at ways to create a cycle and pedestrian link between Eastburn and the railway station while maintaining or extending existing bridleways in the area.
"The proposals are part of development plans for land adjoining Airedale Hospital, Steeton, and at this stage the council is publicising the scheme and seeking the public's views before any decision is made," he said.
"We have already discussed the scheme with the British Horse Society and we would welcome any comments from other interested parties."
