The heartbroken father of a motorcyclist who died after a rush-hour road smash has paid tribute to his loving son.

Dean Burd died from multiple injuries after he lost control of his Suzuki bike and became trapped under a car which had been pulling out of a side road near Baildon last March.

Harry Burd, speaking after the inquest at Bradford Coroner's Court, said: "The family is devastated. He was a wonderful son and a wonderful father." He added that the family did not have any animosity towards the other driver involved in the accident.

Mr Burd, 30, of Alma Street, Queensbury, was rushed to the Royal Infirmary after the early morning collision with a Volkswagen Polo, but died a short time later.

Ralph Barritt told the Bradford inquest that he pulled up next to Mr Burd on his bike at a set of traffic lights and had a brief chat.

When they set off, Mr Burd later overtook him even though he was travelling at about 45mph in a 30mph zone.

"Dean was accelerating. He started to brake hard - the back of the bike was snaking," Mr Barritt said. "It seemed to slip and caused Dean to come off the bike and slide up the road under the car. It hit the back of the car and that's what made the car spin. It could have been me. It could have been anybody.''

In a statement read to the hearing, car driver Lynda Fletcher said that after she pulled out into the road, she saw something go along the ground and hit the car. "I could not understand what had gone on."

Recording a verdict of accidental death, coroner Roger Whittaker said that had Mr Burd been travelling within the speed limit, the accident could have been avoided.
