Golf: Phillip Wood emerged as winner of the Yorkshire Order of Merit after shaking off a late night to grab second place in the Moortown Masters.

The former Yorkshire captain from Keighley explained: "We had been to a wedding the day before and I only got about four hours sleep.

"I was so tired at lunchtime, I didn't have anything to eat, I just had 20 minutes sleep in the car. Then I shot a hole in one!"

The ace came at the 174-yard fourth with a five iron. He birdied the other two par threes on his way to a second round, two-under-par 70 to add to his morning 72.

That left him six shots behind England international Simon Dyson who carded two superb 68s.

But it was enough to earn Wood 340 Order of Merit points to finish the season with 1055, 15 ahead of Dyson and 23 in front of Matthew Haddock, who was leading going into the final event.

Wood's triumph, which included wins in the York Rosebowl and the Bingley St Ives scratch, was even more remarkable because he only played in six of the 16 events.

"I didn't think I could get enough points to win the Order of Merit and when they announced the prizes from fifth down, I felt disappointed because I'd not got into the top five!

"It was a big surprise when they announced I'd won it," said Wood, who missed a large chunk of last season with a back injury.

"I've played less golf this year but I've been very relaxed and enjoyed it more.

"I also won the individual title in the Yorkshire Second Division team championship and was runner-up in the Bradford Amateur Match-play, so all in all it's been a good year."
