Elderly people in Bradford were today warned to be on their guard after a spate of bogus policemen.

A man dressed as a police officer is targeting pensioners in the Girlington area and conning his way into their homes.

The latest incident was on Wednesday, when the man stole £150 from a 90-year-old woman.

Police, who believe the man is part of a professional operation, warned people not to let callers into their homes without checking they are genuine.

Sergeant Roy Wensley, of Toller Lane police, said: "The man is dressed in a police uniform and has false identification.

"In this incident he claimed he was a detective sergeant and said he was hunting a third man in connection with a burglary.

"After the woman let him in he asked where she kept money and said he would mark it with a security pen.

"He then asked for a cup of tea and, while she was in the kitchen, ran off with her purse."

Sgt Wensley said it was a particularly nasty offence, preying on old women and using the trustworthy identity of a police officer.

There had been a number in incidents in the Girlington area.

"A police officer would never ask where money is kept in a house," added Sgt Wensley.

"We believe this is part of a professional operation and would appeal to anyone with information to get in touch. We are especially keen to speak to people who have not reported an incident to the police."

The man is described as white, in his 30s, over 6ft, clean shaven and well-spoken with short black hair.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Sgt Wensley on (01274) 376219 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
