Wakefield Trinity chief executive Steve Ferres today pledged that his club would not simply "make up the numbers" in Super League.

The First Division champions finally succeeded in their bid to become the 14th members of Super League and, along with newly-formed Gateshead Thunder, will kick off an expanded division on the weekend of March 5-7.

The West Yorkshire club have less than four months to strengthen their team, put in place a new infrastructure and carry out much-needed ground repairs.

"We would have liked more time but we're quietly confident that we can put together a team that won't finish bottom," said Ferres a member of Bradford Northern's championship winning squad of the late 70's and early 80's.

"Super League has come a long way and we appreciate that we've a lot of catching up to do.

"A budget is available for players and we will do whatever is required in the short term to satisfy the minimum ground requirements."

Trinity based their application on a move to a new purpose-built stadium on a 138-acre site near the M1 by 2000.
