GUISELEY RANGERS 10

HEYWOOD TIGERS 25

GUISELEY Rangers entertained Heywood Tigers from Rochdale in the Pennine Presidents Trophy last Saturday at Nunroyd Avenue but failed to progress further in the competition losing 25 -10.

Although Rangers were without some regular players, missing due to injuries, no excuse can be given to the defeat. Heywood were a strong tackling team and deserved their win.

Rangers kicked off and played up the slope for the first half but quickly gave away a penalty. The kick from the half-way line just went wide but two minutes later Heywood opened the scoring with a try which thay converted and gave a 6 point lead so early in the game. Rangers came back strongly when Alex White took the ball into the Heywood half, handed on to Tim Cowling who was just brought down a metre from the try line. A penalty awarded to Rangers gave Simon Parker the opportunity to put the home side on the scoreboard, reducing the visitor's leading to 4 points.

Tony Smith then put in one of his kicks, gathered the ball and handed on to Tim Cowling but the Rangers prop forward was well tackled. Some good play by Paul Jarvis, Danny Fenton and Steve Dale resulted in Dale going close before being pulled down just short of the line and Rangers looked as though they might get on top but then a break by Heywood resulted in an unconverted try in the corner. Rangers were soon on the offensive and another good kick by Tony Smith was just gathered by the Heywood full-back, Smith being obstructed in the race for the ball. Steve Barber was making usual strong runs with Simon Jeavens showing some good defensive play, and the game could have gone either way. Tony Smith again kicked through but Stuart Patchett who just lost the race for the ball.

Heywood's prop forward was sin binned for 'talking' and this gave Rangers an opportunity to take advantage but Heywood's defence was first class. Just on half-time the visitor's scored another converted try giving the score Rangers 2 Heywood 16.

On the re-start Rangers put all they had into attack which resulted in Jim Denman going in for a try but Simon Parker just failed to convert with a difficult kick. Heywood, however, came back when their full-back scored an excellent try from 30 metres out. The try was converted and Heywood had a strong lead of 22 points to 6. Jon Beanland was tackling well and making some strong runs but time and again the visitor's defence held out. Alex White scored a good try for Rangers but Parker was unable to convert. Three drop goals by Heywood made the final score Rangers 10 Heywood 25.
