Guiseley Rangers ...........8
GUISELEY Rangers failed to progress to the next round of the Yorkshire Cup when they lost a highly contested match with West Bowling last Saturday.
Rangers lost the match with only 15 minutes left when West Bowling scored a disputed try when it appeared that the scorer had received a forward pass and had been pushed into touch.
Rangers made some errors in their own half but the forwards laid the platform with some good yardage.
Darren Clayton, Rangers' captain, who was obliged to watch the game from the touch-line due to having sustained a leg injury in the previous cup game, said they had excelled themselves and it was disappointing to have lost.
Stuart Patchett, Ranger's young full-back, was regularly up with play and did well throughout in attack and defence, along with Simon Jeavens.
Craig McLaughlan showed his strength time and again with some good strong running, also Paul Jarvis and Jon Beanland.
Rangers went close to a score when Alex White kicked through only to be beaten to the ball by the West Bowling full-back.
Tim Cowling made ground with some strong runs and after 20 minutes Rangers had a chance to go ahead with a penalty but Jon Beanland failed with the kick.
Tony Smith was putting in some good high kicks but the West Bowling defence refused to be caught out and fielded the ball well.
In the 28th minute West Bowling were on the scoreboard with an unconverted try by Dean Garside.
Jon Beanland made some ground when he took the ball from West Bowling's kick-off and Rangers were again putting pressure on the West Bowling defence.
Half-time and West Bowling were in the lead by 4-0.
Eddie Cousins came on to the field and was soon making his presence felt with some good runs but in the 44th minute Martin Tordoff scored an unconverted try for West Bowling, giving them an eight point lead.
Three minutes later Simon Parker put Rangers on the scoreboard with a penalty goal and then Tony Smith scored an excellent try when he followed up his own kick to touch down.
Simon Parker converted the try and the scores were level at eight points all.
Alex White went close for Rangers when he just failed to score, being pulled down inches short of the line.
In the 69th minute Steve Gregory crossed for West Bowling, followed shortly afterwards by a penalty goal by Dean Garside giving the final score West Bowling 14, Rangers eight.
This was another tremendous team effort by Rangers. Stuart Patchett won the man-of-the-match award, with several other players in contention.
On Saturday Rangers will entertain Heywood Tigers (Rochdale) in the first round of the Pennine League Pesident's Cup. Kick-off at Nunroyd Avenue at 2.00pm.
