UNLESS emergency lighting is installed by Christmas Eve, then Otley Civic Centre could be closed
This warning was given by Coun Ray Dunn, chairman, at a meeting of the Civic entre committee on Monday night.
The work includes replacing 11 'no exit signs' with 'running men' and fireproof wiring.
Coun Dunn told members the Civic Centre committee had to pay for the emergency lighting and not Leeds City Council. "This work has to be completed by December 24 otherwise this building closes," he said.
After the meeting, Coun Dunn said he was confident the work would be completed by the due date.
Malcolm Scott, manager, said the exterior of the Civic Centre had now been painted and the walls of the Lecture Hall had been painted by the New Life Christians with materials paid for by the Civic Centre committee.
Other areas which have been refurbished include downstairs and upstairs toilets and the corridor.
Next to be painted is the backstage corridor. The upstairs toilets had had new linoleum fitted.
Mr Scott said: "We are still awaiting a starting date to make good the outer west wall of the building. Leeds City Council's development support services are hoping to render the wall completely."
An Open Day is to be held on Friday, November 13 (10am-10pm). There will be various displays including flowers.
