The son of a local hero drafted his father in to perform the grand re-opening of a Keighley pub on Thursday. Tim Bird, divisional director for Greenalls Pubs and Restaur-ants, recruited his 72-year-old father Henry to pull the first pint at the newly refurbished Three Horses Inn, in Fell Lane, Keighley.
As an RAF gunner in the Second World War, one of the founders of Keighley Victim Support and head of Oakworth primary school from 1960-1966, Mr Bird senior was a worthy VIP guest. "I've never been behind a bar before but it is something I've always wanted to do," he told the Keighley News. "I really enjoy a cold beer. and you can't beat good pub grub like steak and kidney pie or fish and chips."
He was joined by his wife Beth.
The pub, built in 1979 and named after three local mill horses, has had a £288,000 revamp. Work has included new kitchens, new interior design and improved parking facilities. While retaining its satellite television, pool table and dart board, the aim of the re-fit is to give the pub a more traditional feel.
