Plans to install security cameras in Haworth have hit a snag.
Police have told Haworth Traders Association that pictures from the proposed close-circuit television system (CCTV) cannot be beamed to their headquarters at Fair-weather Green, Bradford. Members are now seeking the advice of Bradford council in the hope of finding a solution to the problem.
"Basically we are back to square one," says secretary David Robertson Brown. "We are now a bit unsure what is available to us. We want it co-ordinating somehow because we need to be sure that the proper codes and procedures are followed."
The traders' association had originally planned to beam the pictures back to a control room in Keighley.
However, the company invol-ved in the project said a relay site between Keighley and Haworth would be required to pass on the microwave signals. According to Mr Robertson Brown, this would have taken years to install and would have proved too costly, so the project was shelved.
Traders and residents want to see CCTV cameras installed along Main Street to combat the threat of anti-social behaviour, especially on Friday and Saturday nights. Traders have also reported a growing number of thefts from stores in the village, which they believe could be cut by the installation of security cameras.
Another possible solution would be to have volunteers in the village who would monitor the CCTV pictures. Mr Robert-son Brown says three-quarters of the people in the village have indicated they would help out with such a scheme.
The traders' association is now busy promoting the range of christmas celebrations which members say will be the biggest and best yet.
"I have lived all over the country and I don't know of anywhere else that does it better than Haworth," says Mr Robertson Brown. "We have had an excellent response to the festival and we have had a number of tour operators wishing to come over the christmas weekend."
The festivities will include the traditional Scroggling the Holly ceremony as well as torchlight and christmas cracker weekends.
Another feather in the cap for Haworth is the inclusion of the village in the Jarvis Hotel group's promotional literature.
