Amateur Rugby League: West Bowling must feel badly done by having two tries disallowed in the fifth round of the Yorkshire County Cup to crash out 17-14 against Stanley Rangers at Bankfoot.
With only seven minutes on the clock prop forward Julian Key had a good effort disallowed by the over-fussy Hull referee but shortly afterwards a 30-metre run from Martin Tordoff provided the platform for fellow centre Andy Leek to cross near the posts.
Jason Woolham added the extras to give Bowling a 6-0 advantage. The lead was short lived when the Wakefield side took advantage of some sloppy tackling to level the scores with a converted try. Both sides exchanged penalties before Stanley hit the front with a well worked try from their wingman who cut inside to score a converted try under the posts.
Bowling were quick out of the blocks on the restart when a hanging kick under the bar fooled the Rangers defence allowing Leek to post his second, again converted by Woolham to level the score 14-14.
In the 70th minute Bowling looked to have booked a semi-final place when coach Glenn Barraclough crossed from a play the ball, once again the referee disallowed the try - this time for a knock on - and then killed off the home chances by sin-binning Richard Peel for dissent.
Queensbury maintained their 100 per cent league record with a 13-9 victory against Clayton at Hilltop to move to joint top of the Pennine Premier Division. Bury looked to be in trouble following the late withdrawal of goal kicker Steven Gallagher. Clayton, playing down the slope, stormed into a nine point half time lead. Full back Damian Hunter opened proceedings with a try improved by scrum half Adam Mitchell who then went on to add a penalty and a drop goal.
Queensbury started to take the game by the scruff of the neck and after new signing centre Darren Brown was recalled for a forward pass with the line at his mercy, man of the match, the ex-Clayton stalwart Martin Potts crossed for what proved to be the winning try. Smith made no mistake with the conversion to leave the visitors with their third defeat on the trot.
In Division One Birkenshaw could not get going at home to leaders Illingworth. A penalty goal from Jason Brooksbank was their only score against the Halifax outfit who pulled away with three late tries to give a flattering final scoreline of 28-2. Paul Bancroft was Birkenshaw's best on the day.
Victoria Rangers posted their first away win in 12 months with a 23-14 success at Underbank Rangers A in Division Four. Phil Greenwood, playing his first game of the season, posted the opening try which he also converted. Jason Pounder added a drop goal before centre John Belcher raced the length of the field to score in the corner.
The Vics were well worth the 11-0 half time lead and capitalised further with tries to Belcher and Ray Greenwood in the second half.
In Division Five Shipley won for the first time ever at Park Amateurs B 20-10. They raced to a 16-0 interval lead thanks to a hat-trick from centre Mick Carnelly who then had to leave the field with an arm injury.
A late try to full back Bob Myers clinched the points while Shipley forward John Askham, back in action after a serious neck injury, took the man of the match award.
Leaders Queensbury A were bang in form against Rotherham A posting eight tries and having three disallowed in the 36-24 away win. Scorers were Paul Anderson (2), Paul Skelton (2), Bob Hall, John Batters, Luke Cooper and Andy Barraclough. Bury let Rotherham back into the game by allowing them to score 24 points and the fact that they missed most of their goal kicks could have proved costly in the end.
West Bowling B were on the receiving end of a drubbing 60-4 at home to Siddal B. A solitary try to newcomer Mark 'Rusty' Binns was all they could muster.
