Athletics: The Rivock Edge Hill Race from Silsden Park takes centre stage this Sunday and, as the only open race in the district, it should attract a good field.
With entries on the day only at £3 for the 11am start, its difficult to predict the outcome. Bingley's British fell champion Ian Holmes holds the course record for the ten-mile event - which includes 1,500 feet of ascent - of 60min 23sec set in 1995.
It's been a long, hard season for the 32-year-old, but a highly successful one. The highlight, apart from becoming British and English champion, must surely have been winning the "world's toughest mountain race" on Mount Kinabalu - Malaysia's highest peak - in October in a new record time.
Another world-class athlete, Carol Greenwood, holds the women's best time with her 73min 02sec in 1994.
Whereas Holmes excels on the descent, Greenwood's main attribute is on the climbs, and she even 'mixes it' with the leading men on the way to a summit.
Details for the event, which also has a three-mile junior race for under-17s, can be obtained from Steven Budimir between 7pm-8pm on 01535-674571.
The West Yorkshire Winter League gets underway on Sunday when newcomers Dewsbury play host in the first of five fixtures. Last year's overall champions Pudsey Pacers are expected to dominate again, although Eccleshill, Aireboro Tri and Skipton should provide stern opposition.
Last year's male individual champion, 23-year-old Quentin Lewis of Baildon, has been in good form lately, with a top-ten finish in the West Yorkshire Cross-Country League at Ilkley a fortnight ago, and will be aiming to be top man again for 98-99.
l Calderdale's David Davies made light work of heavy conditions to complete a hat-trick of wins in the Yorkshire Electricity PowerPlay Cross-Country Championships at Potternewton.
The Halifax Harrier, who aims to compete in next year's World Championships in Lisbon over 800 and 1500 metres, finished in 19min 19sec. Matthew Smith, from Haycliffe School, Bradford, won gold in the team event, while Haycliffe had a clean sweep in the women's 3km race, Claire Ryan leading home Elizabeth Broadbent and Jodie Lawler.
