Bradford Council will press ahead with controversial plans to put adverts on its new wheelie bins and vehicles - despite predictions that they will become "naff and tacky".
But member of the waste management sub-committee agreed that the authority should have the final say on the type and appearance of adverts.
The Council will now launch a one-year pilot scheme in partnership with an advertising agency.
Proceeds will go into the cleansing service.
Coun Jeanette Sunderland (Idle, Lib Dem) asked what would happen if people had bought the flowery and leaf patterned wheelie bins which have just been put on sale in Bradford for £15 each.
But sub-committee chairman Coun Keith Thomson said: "I find it very difficult to believe people would pay £15 a time for a wheeled bin. It must be the ultimate definition of an affluent society."
Coun Sunderland said she could see serious problems, with adverts peeling off and bins getting 'tatty and naff'.
She said: "The Council has spent a lot of money on gold coats of arms for the bins and it is going to spoil them."
Coun Ken Baxter (Idle, Lab) said the scheme could earn the Council hundreds of thousands of pounds to be put back into cleansing services.
He said: "I am delighted we have taken this on board."
The sub-committee was given a progress report on the first wheelie bins which rolled into Baildon last month by City Cleansing officer Alan Baff. It said teething problems were being dealt with.
Coun Jack Womersley (Queensbury, Lab) said: "I think the officers are doing a good job. From the reaction beforehand we expected Triffids coming out of the bins and cars being dragged out of the street and swallowed up, but it hasn't happened."
