HOW is your 'Street Credibility'?

I have been listening to the radio, where concerns were expressed about how the elderly are portrayed on television.

It was the consensus of opinion that they are not given a good press, but are seen to be grumpy, mean, out of touch and a general nuisance.

Apparently, representation is to be made to the television authorities to rectify this matter.

Now that I think about it, Christians likewise, are seldom shown in a good light. It appears that we are all vague, naive innocents, or, worse still, pushy, narrow-minded killjoys.

Of course, some of the characters are amusing, because we recognise the shreds of truth there, even if these are grossly exaggerated.

In reality, though, the Christians I meet day by day are ordinary people, getting on with their lives: sometimes struggling with the problems that life inevitably brings, but trying to live lives of integrity, showing care and concern for other people - including the elderly.

I can't immediately bring to mind any characters like that on TV, but of course that would not lend itself to comedy, or make for exciting viewing.

It might be thought that our negative image on TV may make recruitment difficult, but in the end, people are attracted to Christianity because the gospel is good news and its challenge is compelling.

Not that I would object to a good image being broadcast, Christians (as well as the elderly) would appreciate the change.

In any case our 'street cred' could do with a boost.
