Pool AFC 7
A LARGE crowd witnessed a superb Pool performance in this Wharfedale FA Challenge Cup quarter-final at Arthington Lane against a side that has itself risen to prominence over recent seasons.
With Pool looking to continue their great run of winning every game this season they got off to a great start against their Craven League opponents when Taylor played a perfectly weighted through ball to Matt O'Grady who scored with a powerful strike.
This early goal boosted the home side and they took total control with some great attacking play.
Pool took their tally to two when Shaun Joyce ran through and slotted home.
Full-back Richard Carlton then stormed away and struck a superb shot to leave the 'keeper helpless.
Addingham just did not know what had hit them and a foul on Joyce resulted in a penalty being awarded. The striker got up to slam the spot kick in putting his side 4-0 up.
A lot of teams would have sat back on that sort of lead but confident teams plough on and that is what Pool did. They never stopped working and pressing and the back four - well organised by skipper Healey - were far too good for Addingham.
Joyce made it five after latching onto a superb through ball from Wilson to slot home at the near post.
A rare lapse in defence by Ingle resulted in a deflected cross making the half-time score 5-1.
The second-half was a tough affair with Addingham showing a lot of pride and spirit and only a good save by the 'keeper kept Pool out again.
Myers on the wing and O'Grady in the middle enjoyed great games and top scorer Joyce kept going throughout and drilled in his fourth goal.
A sloppy error by Nigel Smithson gave Addingham hope as another penalty was awarded but Steve Winterburn brought off a splendid save.
Another mistake at the back let Addingham in for a second goal but then Nigel Smithson atoned for his mistake by slamming home another penalty to give an emphatic scoreline.
Pool have now won all 11 games they have played and this win takes them into the semi-final draw which will be made in February.
Lee Ingle was again solid and played well on the ball. Myers and Taylor worked the wings effectively but the match point went to strikers Shaun Joyce and Carol Wilson.
Guiseley AFC 3
Otley Town 0
SOME pundits suggested that there may be an unset by putting down Otley Town to defeat Guiseley Reserves.
Although they fought hard Otley conceded two goals in the final 25 minutes to go down 3-0 to the trophy holders.
Guiseley, who have found it hard to get in matches because of the bad weather over the last two months, scored through Chris Jeng (2) and Richard Machell.
Machell netted the first in the ninth minute from close range when 'keeper Aidrian Atter failed to keep a grip on the ball.
Jeng showed his opportunism being in the right place at the right time after good work by Craig Bower.
In a tough game Guiseley lacked height in the middle of defence but youngsters Mark Flanagan and Richard Beckram battled valiantly against a fast raiding Town side in which James Firth looked a useful prospect up front.
Trinity Ath Baildon 1
Burley Trojans 3
BURLEY Trojans caused the major shock of the day with a deserved victory at Baildon to set up an attractive looking quarter-final against neighbours Ilkley.
On a poor surface Trojans settled quickly and the pace of Phil Constantine and Stuart Dibb up front had the home defence rattled.
It was no surprise when the visitors went ahead on 20 minutes, John Lofthouse coolly slotting home from the spot following a foul in the area. Dibb came close to adding a second shortly afterwards, his close range effort grazing a post.
Trojans doubled their advantage after an hour with the goal of the game. Constantine mesmerised the Baildon defence with his weaving run and when he squared the ball, Dibb netted from six yards.
It was backs to the wall for Trojans as the home side pressed to get back into the game but the defence, with Rob Browne outstanding, held firm.
Baildon did reduce the arrears with 10 minutes remaining when Simon Broadbent fired home following goalmouth scramble.
For all their pressure Baildon never seriously threatened an equaliser and Trojans sealed their passage into the next round in injury time when player manager Gary Shankland followed up on Dibb's initial shot to steer the ball home.
The Trinity scorer, in a sad day for them, was Simon Broadbent.
This must rank as one of Trojans finest performances for many years and they can look forward to their quarter-final with considerable optimism.
Burley will now go on to meet another Harrogate League side, local rivals, Ilkley AFC, in the quarter-final to be played on December 19 and who is to say they will not progress to the semi-finals to be played next April.
Ilkley AFC 4
Ilkley Junior Youth 2
IN the Ilkley derby, the more experienced Ilkley AFC came through their tie with Ilkley Juniors Youth.
Ilkley Juniors Youth were formed this season when their Under-17 side of last season wanted to stay together, therefore they joined the Craven Saturday League and have done very well in their first step into open age football.
To play Ilkley AFC was a big day for them and after being a little overawed in the opening half-hour they came to terms to give a very creditable performance which will do their confidence no harm at all.
After falling behind, they pulled the score back to two goals each before going down to two goals in the final 15 or so minutes.
Joe Horne scored both the Juniors goals. All credit to team manager David Houlston and his helpers.
Scoring for Ilkley AFC were Chris Mynett (2), Alan Stockdale and Cathul Kelly.
They now face another local derby at home to Burley Trojans in the quarter-final.
Yeadon New Inn 0
Rawdon OLD BOYS 11
RAWDON Old Boys marched on against a spirited Yeadon New Inn who were no match for them as they continue in their routine march towards another Wharfedale Challenge Cup Final.
Yeadon gave a spirited performance but couldn't cope with the class of the Old Boys.
The Old Boys did not get going until the second-half after manager Joe McPhee had given them a stern talking to.
Although 3-0 up at half-time it was only a matter of time before the glut of goals came.
It was another good performance from all the Rawdon players.
Yeadon 'keeper Brian Teale saved a Gordon Burnell penalty in the 88th minute.
The game was played in good spirit by both teams and was well refereed by Tony Brown.
Old Boys scorers were: Mark Stirk (3), Anthony Gilks (2), Scott Harper, Gareth Reynolds, Ian Ruthven, Michael James, David Pennett and Gordon Burnell.
Rawdon old Boys entertain Ardsley in the League Cup on Saturday.
