Roadworks which caused chaos on one of the districts busiest roads are expected to finish this week.

The good news for motorists travelling along the notoriously snarled up A650 was given by highways chief Phil Thornton today.

The chairman of the highways sub committee demanded an urgent explanation after motorists fumed for hours in massive tailbacks.

People living in Bingley said the resurfacing and roundabout improvements at Cottingley Bar had been a traffic nightmare.

The work is being carried out for the Highways Agency which deals with the trunk road.

Bradford Council is acting as its agent and has put the work out to sub-contractors.

But Councillor Thornton said he had expected the main work to end within the next day or two after asking for it to be speeded up.

He said: "I am very pleased that our staff have been able to provide a solution to the problem.

"I am confident the road will be running as normal and I commend the extra effort which has been put in to achieve it."

Although the road re-surfacing will be finished, some other work will be done up to Christmas.

Councillor Thornton pointed out that although there has been disruption, the long-term performance should be trouble-free for many years to come, bringing benefits to the community.

The Highways agency has apologised for the disruption.
