Residents are planning a petition in a bid to get Bradford Council to repair their street, which they have dubbed an eyesore.

Householders in Barmby Street in Wyke call their pot-holed road "The Lakes" because many of the holes are filled with a sea of water and mud.

Barmby Street, along with eight others which include nearby Birkby Street and Ashfield Terrace, are not maintained by the local authority and are known as unadopted roads.

But a Bradford Council highways spokesman said there were hundreds of unadopted roads across the city and its budget for adopting them was fully committed for the next financial year.

Spearheading the residents' campaign for change is David Clark who said urgent repairs were needed before a serious accident occurred.

He said: "It is not just our street, but ours is by far the worst.

"Vehicles cannot travel up or down without crashing into large holes full of water.

"The worst one is at the junction with Wilson Road, which is positively dangerous as it causes vehicles to lurch out on to the main road in front of oncoming traffic."

James and Gladys Horne have been living in the street for more than 50 years and believe the Council should repair the damage..

For many years Mr Horne would fill up the holes with rubble.

"But I can't do it any more as I am in my 80s. If they could just do something about the situation on a temporary basis, then we would be happy," said Mr Horne.

The Council spokesman said: "We have an annual budget for surfacing and adopting private roads which is already fully committed for 1998-99."
