Motor Sport: Canterbury's Graham Jarvis won the 52nd national Northern Experts Trial at Wildboarclough, near Macclesfield.
The 23-year-old world No 4, on a Rathmell Sport Scorpa, beat 18-year-old Martin Crosswaite, from Bingley, and Youth National champion Michael Phillipson for the top podium position.
Crosswaite had one major failure on his first lap, and that cost him any chance of repeating his winning ride of 1997.
His GasGas machine jammed against a rocky outcrop at the 18th climb, and stopped the bike in its tracks.
As Crosswaite fought for balance the observer decided that a failure had been registered and duly marked the teenager with a five-mark penalty which was to prove costly.
Despite a second lap that matched winner Jarvis's one-mark penalty, the damage had been done for Crosswaite.
Japan's Takahisa Fujinami rocked the European stars with victory in the international motor cycle arena trial in Andorra. He took the top award from Spaniard Marc Colomer and world No 1 Dougie Lampkin.
The Silsden rider failed two sections in the grand finale, and that put him down to third overall.
It was the first victory in Europe for Fujinami, who is now ranked sixth in the world outdoor trials, and is making a name for himself on the indoor scene.
Sheffield 99 Arena Trial joint organisers Neil Crosswaite and Martin Lampkin have been told their event will kick off next year's World Championship.
Lampkin said: "The Helsinki Arena Trial has been re-dated, so the Avondale Management Embassy-backed fixture on January 2 now opens the World Arena Championship.''
Guiseley brothers Chris and Andrew Carter won their classes at the Wetherby DMC President's Trial at Fellbeck.
Bradford youngster James Lovell took Class B in the youth section, and Leeds hotshot James Dabill was the master of Class C on his new GasGas.
Main bike event in the region this weekend is the old established Bradford Motor Club Timperley Cup Trial above Laneshawbridge.
Now much tamer than 40 years ago when it was a major feat to just finish the trial, it will attract the region's top exponents.
