Non-League Soccer: Bradford Park Avenue were sent spinning out of the UniBond League Challenge Cup 3-1 at Blyth Spartans last night.

Trevor Storton's men fought bravely throughout the tie but were eventually undone by two goals in as many minutes late in the second half of the second round tie.

The Division One side can take comfort from the way they made Blyth battle for their victor despite their Premier Division opponents being a division above Avenue.

Bradford keeper Derek O'Connor had to punch clear from Richie Alderson's early corner as Blyth began in positive mode.

However Avenue soon forced their way back into it with Ian Briggs forcing home keeper Terry Burke into a fine save after only seven minutes.

The home side had the better of the play and it was no surprise when they took a 13th minute lead.

The Avenue defence failed to clear a weak Steve Hutchinson shot and Anthony Skedd drove the loose ball through a ruck of players from 20 yards.

Despite this opening goal, the tie was evenly balanced with both sides going close as the play switched from end to end. But that all changed with the quick double that settled the contest in favour of the home side.

A long punt after 70 minutes had O'Connor rushing out of his area to head clear but the ball fell for Steve Locker who lobbed into the unguarded net from 25 yards. Less than two minutes later, Hutchinson lifted a shot into the roof of the net from six yards.

Nick Hey brought the scoreline back to something like a fair reflection of the game in the 73rd minute when he netted from close range after a neat build-up.

Guiseley managed to ease their way past Premier Division rivals Spennymoor United 1-0 in their second round replay at Nethermoor despite failing to convert a late spot kick.

Guiseley missed a number of good chances before clinching victory with Roland Egege's 73rd minute strike.

They should have scored a second five minutes later after Colin Hunter was brought down in the area but the visitors' keeper Davie Campbell saved Stephen Hook's penalty.

Eccleshill United lost out in their Northern Counties East League Cup second round tie when Ossett Town's big guns saw them to a 2-1 win. Former Burnley striker John Francis put Town in front after just two minutes.

Kevin Megson levelled for the home side ten minutes before half time but former Huddersfield Town forward Gary Brooke hit a late winner.
