An organisation aiming to bring together African-Caribbean residents in Bradford has turned a derelict housing office into a drop-in centre.

The Frontline initiative, which has been funded by Bradford Council, is offering help, advice and support at its new base in Green Lane in Manningham.

But staff say the project will already have to fight for survival after its Council grant for next year was axed.

The group is offering advice on areas including rights, employment and training and workers can refer people to the relevant agencies.

"We carried out a survey in the area and we found that what the community wanted most was a drop-in centre," said project co-ordinator Beverly Higgins.

"Next we're looking to organise study support for local children where they can come in and do their homework.

"The project is aimed primarily at African-Caribbean people but everyone is welcome to drop in. We felt there was a real need for an organisation for this section of the community.

"We're trying to encourage people to call in and see what we have to offer and just let the residents know we're here."

The council grant has paid for the rent of the building and two part-time support workers but staff say they won't be getting further funding.

"We're just getting ourselves off the ground so it was a bit of a blow when we discovered our grant was one of those axed by the council," said Beverly. "The project is going to have to work extra hard to try and raise cash to keep us going.

"It's a huge building and has so much potential. We've got a hall that we could decorate and hire out for community events and rooms that could be turned into a crche and classrooms."

The drop-in centre is open on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 10am to 4pm and for more information telephone Bradford 733308.
